Abstract

This study was carried out to determine chewing lice species of some aquatic birds in Basrah Province located south of Iraq. Between September 2016 to April 2017. A total of 100 aquatic birds specimens belonging to four species, two are wild: dunlin Calidris alpina and coot Fullica atra, and two are domestic: ducks Anas platyrhynchos and geese Anas domesticus, were examined for the chewing lice infestation, Totally 76 of 100 birds were examined with prevalence 76%. Seven species of chewing lice recorded in this paper, Fulicoffula gallinula (Karriker, 1953), Anaticola crassicornis (Scopoli, 1763), Pseudomenopon pilosum (L. 1758), Trinoton querqeudulae (Karriker, 1953), Fulicoffula lurida (Nitzsch, 1818), Anatoecus icterodes (Nitzsch, 1818) and Ciconiphilus decimfaciatus(Boisduval and Lacordaire, 1835), of the identified louse species listed above, Ciconiphilus decimfaciatus and T. querqeudulae were recorded for the first time in Iraq, Study the chewing lice infestations of these birds was done for the first time in Iraq. The infestations of aquatic birds with lice were ranged between single to fourth times and the high prevalence was recorded in single and double infestations type with significant differences.
